The history of the Avas Cellars dates back several centuries, with the sandstone soil of Avas Hill providing ideal conditions for viticulture and wine cellars. These cellars ensured the optimal temperature and noble mold essential for winemaking. The quality of wines produced here approached the standards of the renowned Tokaj wine region, making Avas a hub of grape cultivation.
For centuries, citizens of Miskolc and nearby villages used these cellars, many of which have survived to this day. However, in the 18th and 19th centuries, local winemaking suffered due to wine adulteration and the phylloxera epidemic, leading to the decline of the Avas wine region. Phylloxera destroyed the vineyards, leaving some cellars as mere remnants of the past.
Avas is famous not only for its wines but also for its cultural role. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it became a gathering place for Miskolc’s citizens, often attracting writers and poets. Today, the Avasi cellars have been revitalized through wineries and gastronomic-cultural events such as the Avasi Wine Wander and the Miskolc Spritzer Festival. Avas remains an appealing destination not only for wine lovers but also for those who appreciate culture and social life.
