4 Mins Rome in Autumn: How to Visit the Eternal City Smartly and Responsibly 2026 September 12 Let’s be honest: we’ve all seen photos of the Trevi Fountain or the Colosseum where, instead of ancient stones, it’s mostly other tourists’ hats and selfie sticks that catch your eye. If you’ve ever tried to navigate the Roman crowds in July, trudging along 38-degree asphalt, you’ll know that bucket list trips can sometimes feel more like survival missions than the relaxing holidays of your dreams.

6 Mins What Europe is Doing Differently in 2026 – Best Practices in Sustainable Tourism 2026 August 09 For a long time, sustainable tourism was seen as a realm of strict restrictions, unexpected extra costs, and guilt. However, in 2026, something fundamentally changed. More and more European destinations realised that instead of imposing bans, they could achieve real breakthroughs by involving visitors, encouraging them, and raising their awareness of sustainability. As travellers, we are no longer passive observers or a "burden to be tolerated" by a destination, but active partners in its preservation. This also sends a clear message to the tourism industry: there is no single, universal solution; each region must tailor its responses to its own local characteristics and communities.

19 Mins AI and Sustainable Tourism – What's on the Scales? 2026 July 26 Nowadays, it's rare to attend a tourism conference without hearing that artificial intelligence is fundamentally transforming the industry's operations. A few presentations later, the discussion often turns to how AI consumes a lot of energy, requires water for cooling data centres, and continuously increases the demand for IT infrastructure. Both statements are true. Artificial intelligence does have an environmental impact, but it also provides access to knowledge and tools that were previously unaffordable for many tourism businesses. The real question, therefore, is not whether AI is good or bad. It's much more about how we use it, what data it works with, and the goals we set for it.

5 Mins Eat Local! The Tastiest Side of Sustainability Lies in Local Flavours 2026 July 05 During our travels, the deepest cultural experiences often come not from museums but from what's on our plates. One of the most enjoyable and easiest steps towards sustainable tourism is conscious gastronomy. By choosing local farmers' markets, family-run eateries, and regional wineries over imported ingredients and global fast-food chains, you directly support the local community. Plus, your food hasn’t travelled halfway around the world to reach your plate, keeping your ecological footprint minimal. It’s a true win-win situation, which we’ll also celebrate in our upcoming stamp-collecting game.

3 Mins The Reality Behind the Stone Tower Insta-Trend: Why This Seemingly Harmless Hobby Harms Nature 2026 June 25 You're scrolling through Instagram or TikTok, and a magical photo catches your eye: on the banks of a rushing mountain stream, in the glow of the setting sun, towers of perfectly balanced, stacked stones rise up. Aesthetic, calming, slightly spiritual, and incredibly 'photogenic'. It's no wonder more and more hikers feel compelled to build one themselves and capture the moment. Building stone towers along riverbanks and in forests has become a global Insta-trend. However, there's a huge problem: while they look great in photos, they actually cause significant ecological damage. Why does this seemingly harmless hobby pose a threat to nature, and why are national parks around the world asking us to stop?

3 Mins Pack Less, Travel Lighter! The Secrets of Minimalist Packing and a Capsule Wardrobe 2026 June 22 There's a classic travel scenario we all know too well: kneeling on the tarmac in the middle of the airport, desperately trying to rearrange your suitcase because the check-in desk revealed you're two kilos over the weight limit. Or the other extreme: sweating in the middle of a beautiful, cobblestoned old town, dragging a massive wheeled monstrosity behind you, wishing with every step you'd left half your belongings at home. Statistics show that tourists don't use at least 30-40% of the clothes and items they bring with them on holiday.

3 Mins Digital Detox in Nature: How to Switch Off Your Phone and Truly Connect with the World 2026 June 21 As modern travellers, we live with a rather peculiar dependency: we feel that if we don’t capture a moment with our phone or instantly share it on social media, it’s as if the moment never happened. We stand on the world’s most breathtaking mountain peaks, deep in ancient forests, or by a crystal-clear stream, and instead of breathing in the fresh air, we’re staring at our screens. Notifications, pinging emails, and the endless scrolling of news feeds keep us captive even during our holidays. Our brains remain in a constant state of alertness, turning the much-anticipated rest into just another source of digital stress.

By the time you finally reach your chosen attraction, your stress levels are through the roof, and all you remember from the trip is a blur of motorways. What if this summer you let go of all that and switched to a pace where the holiday doesn't start when you arrive, but with the very first metre? Slow travel isn't just a boring hippie trend; it's the recipe for genuine, quality experiences – and the best tool for that is a bicycle.

4 Mins The Treasure Beneath Our Feet: Why Soil Protection is the Foundation of Conscious Hiking 2026 May 31 When we grab our backpacks and set off to explore the world, our gaze is often fixed on the horizon. The surrounding mountain peaks, dense forests, and rugged valleys easily make us forget that the greatest natural treasure actually lies directly beneath our feet. Soil is not just an inanimate layer we walk on but an incredibly complex, fragile, and living ecosystem. In line with I-DEST's global sustainability perspective, it’s important to understand that responsible tourism begins with the very first step – more precisely, with where and how we place our feet. Protecting forests and mountains isn’t just about picking up litter; preserving the invisible balance depends on respecting the soil and vegetation.

6 Mins What have we learned from 2025? Sustainable tourism trends that will define 2026 2025 December 31 By 2025, tourism had in many ways "returned" to its peak: according to the UN Tourism World Tourism Barometer, international tourist arrivals increased by 5% in the first nine months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, and exceeded 2019 levels by 3%. However, this surge highlighted an important point: growth alone is not the goal. The real question is how destinations can remain liveable for locals while staying attractive to travellers. The following trends are based on the experiences of 2025 and are expected to gain further momentum in 2026 – not just in theory, but in very practical decisions: what guests choose, how providers prepare, and what tools destinations can use to manage the pressure more effectively.

3 Mins Sustainable hotel: why is a 'green towel programme' not enough? 2025 December 19 When we talk about sustainable hotels, most people immediately think of signs saying "we only change towels on request," recycling bins, or messages like "let's save water." These are useful steps, but the reality is far more exciting: a recent hotel study revealed one of the most important lessons – sustainability is not the responsibility of just one department.
