Kováts Photo Museum
The Kováts Photo Museum operates in the city centre of Odorheiu Secuiesc and uniquely showcases over one and a half centuries of photography history as Transylvania's first permanent photo history exhibition venue. The museum was created from the private collection of the Kováts family, and it continues to be maintained with passion and expertise – offering visitors not only technical equipment but also human stories and glimpses of a bygone world.
More information
The exhibition focuses on the development and material culture of 20th-century photography: old cameras, enlargers, darkroom tools, photo lab accessories, glass negatives, and paper prints tell the story of the early days of photography. One of the museum's most valuable sections is the collection of Transylvanian studio photographs, which provides insight into the fashion, customs, and portrait culture of the late 19th century through to the mid-20th century.
The Kováts Photo Museum not only displays objects but also functions as a living knowledge centre: engaging the public with temporary exhibitions, photo history lectures, masterclasses, school programmes, and themed guided tours. Additionally, a key objective is the digitisation and preservation of old photo archives from Odorheiu Secuiesc and the Székely Land, contributing to the protection of the region's visual heritage.
The museum is recommended for photography professionals, art enthusiasts, families, and school groups, as it uniquely demonstrates how photography has shaped our perception of the world and ourselves. The exhibition offers an intimate yet inspiring space where technological progress and personal memories form a cohesive unity.
The Kováts Photo Museum is one of Odorheiu Secuiesc's hidden gems – a place where images of the past gain new meaning, and visitors can marvel at the timeless magic of photography.
