Lázárfalva

Lázárfalva (in Romanian: Lăzărești) is one of the easternmost settlements in Harghita County, administratively part of the commune of Csíkkozmás. The village lies nestled between the Harghita mountain range and the Tusnad Mountains, on the edge of the historic Székely Land, at an altitude of 800 metres above sea level. The enclosed, basin-like landscape, the pine-covered hills, and the crystal-clear air exude a unique tranquillity. The village has preserved the traditional Székely village structure and way of life to this day: small-scale farms, wooden fences, carved Székely gates, and tidy courtyards welcome visitors. For the locals, the forest and the land remain integral to daily life – a significant portion of the population is still engaged in forestry, animal husbandry, or beekeeping. Several traditional mineral water springs are known in the area, which the locals use for their reputed healing properties. Close to Lázárfalva lies Nyergestető, one of Székely Land’s most important historical memorial sites. During the battle on 1 August 1849, the Székelys displayed heroic resistance against the overwhelming Russian forces, and the memorial site with wooden grave markers still stands today in honour of the fallen soldiers and Székely volunteers. Nyergestető is significant not only historically but also spiritually: the memory of the freedom fight is almost tangible here, and the view is unparalleled – on clear days, one can see as far as the Csík Basin and the Háromszék Mountains. The village is an excellent starting point for eco-tourism excursions, cycling or hiking adventures. The area’s rich flora and fauna, mineral springs, stream valleys, and forest trails all invite quiet exploration. The nearby thermal baths of Tusnádfürdő and the nature reserves along the Olt River complement the experience of visiting Lázárfalva. Lázárfalva is for those who wish not only to see Székely Land but to experience its deeper layers: the everyday lives of people living off the land, the living traditions, and the enduring commitment to freedom that still echoes among the wooden grave markers of Nyergestető. - editorial content -
