Zetelaka

Zetelaka (in Romanian, Zetea) is located in Harghita County, just 12 km north of Székelyudvarhely. This village in the valley of the Nagy-Küküllő river boasts a traditional Székely settlement structure, a rich cultural heritage, and vibrant folk traditions. The village centre also serves as the administrative hub for several nearby settlements – Deság, Küküllőkeményfalva, Subcetate, and Zeteváralja. The settlement was first mentioned in written records in 1332 under the name "Zathalaka." Even in the Middle Ages, it was a significant village known for its mountain shepherding and woodworking. To this day, the population remains predominantly Hungarian-speaking. Zetelaka is also renowned for its master woodcarvers and carpenters: numerous Székely gates, barns, bell towers, and wooden-spired churches in the region bear the mark of Zetelaka craftsmen. Woodworking and craftsmanship remain a living tradition and an important part of the local identity. A major tourist attraction of the area is the Zetelaka Reservoir (also known as Zete Lake), located near the village and created by damming the Nagy-Küküllő river. The artificial lake and its surroundings offer excellent opportunities for fishing, water sports, and summer relaxation. The surrounding mountainous region is also a great destination for hikers, nature enthusiasts, and mushroom foragers. Zetelaka is noteworthy from a culinary perspective as well: local restaurants and guesthouses often serve homemade Székely dishes, frequently prepared with locally sourced ingredients. The village and its surroundings feature numerous rural guesthouses and chalets, some of which are situated directly near the reservoir. Zetelaka thus preserves Székely traditions and a rich cultural heritage while welcoming tourists and those seeking rural experiences. It is an ideal destination for anyone wishing to explore the beauty of Székelyföld in an authentic village setting. - editorial content -
