Horváth Hill

Horváth Hill is one of Miskolc's most beloved green spaces with a long history.

More information

Horváth Hill, one of Miskolc's most beloved green spaces, has a long history. Its development began in the second half of the 19th century when the disorganised areas between the cellars on the northern side of Avas and the vineyards and orchards on the southern slopes became a problem. Both local cellar owners and the city residents pushed for the area's improvement. Captain Lucián Musitzky's engineering team, which had previously contributed to the creation of Népkert, assisted with the work. To support the project, Lajos Horváth, a Member of Parliament, donated 1,000 forints, and the area was named Horváth Hill even then. During the creation of the hanging garden, roads were widened, stairways were built, viewpoints were established, and trees were planted. However, before the First World War, maintaining Horváth Hill became challenging, and the area's development progressed slowly. The development plan devised by the Borsodi Bükk Association was only partially realised, but even so, Horváth Hill became one of the city's largest tourist areas. Today, Horváth Hill is once again a favourite retreat for Miskolc's residents. The terraces of the hanging garden host a variety of activities: playgrounds, sunbathing areas, a skate park, and a fitness park await visitors, ensuring that people of all ages can find suitable leisure opportunities.
