Ugron Castle

The predecessor of the castle was already mentioned in the mid-15th century, when the area was owned by the noble Geréb family. By the 17th century, the manor house had been transformed into a stone-built, fortress-like castle, which was rebuilt by András Geréb, Captain of the Guard for Gábor Bethlen, in 1625. The building subsequently passed into the hands of Gábor Bethlen, György I Rákóczi, and later the Huszár, Torma, Nemes, and Mikó families, until it was purchased by the Ugron family in 1866.

The building acquired its current form around 1817, when Miklós Mikó remodelled it in Baroque style. For centuries, the castle was a representative site of the Székely noble lifestyle: it served as a residence, a centre for farming, and a hub for public life. At the end of the 19th century, Zoltán Ugron, Member of Parliament, and his family operated a model farm here, maintaining a stud farm, distillery, and vegetable plantations. Their gardener from Fiatfalva even won a national award.

Inside the castle, original architectural features listed in the 1805 inventory can still be discovered: cross-vaulted rooms, stucco decorations, and the 1714 inscription on the vault of the courtyard chapel. Despite its centuries-long history, the castle was characterised throughout by a frugal, simple, and hardworking lifestyle, rather than ostentatious luxury. At the heart of the estate were work and self-sufficiency, as evidenced by the surviving farm buildings and gardens.

During the communist era, the castle was nationalised and left abandoned to decay for a long time. After 2010, Éva Ugron and Miklós Maróty began its restoration, and between 2021 and 2024, a complete renovation was carried out. As a result, the building now serves as a venue for events and a historical attraction open to visitors. Visitors can learn about the castle's centuries-long history, stroll through the park designed in the style of the former Renaissance garden, and view the restored chapel and the historic wine cellar.

The Fiatfalva Ugron Castle is more than just a building – it is a living testament to how the noble history of Székely Land was written among the hills, and how the past can be transformed into value for the present.
