Šiatorská Bukovinka
Šiatorská Bukovinka is a small village in Slovakia, located right next to the Hungarian border, on the Slovak side of the Novohrad–Nógrád Geopark. The village’s name reflects its historical ties to mining, as well as the nearby picturesque Sátor Hill, a prominent landmark in the region's landscape. Geographical Location Šiatorská Bukovinka lies at the meeting point of the Bükk Foothills and the Cserhát Mountains, along the eastern edge of the Medves Plateau. The village is surrounded by stunning volcanic hills that offer exceptional natural and geological value. One of the most popular hiking destinations in the area is Šiatoroš Hill, located just across the border but easily accessible on foot from the village. History and Mining Heritage The name of the settlement also refers to its past role in basalt mining, which significantly shaped the local economy from the late 19th century until the mid-20th century. The basalt rock formations were important not only for industrial use but remain a distinctive natural attraction to this day. After the closure of the mines, the area gradually became reclaimed by nature. Geological Values and Hiking Opportunities The surrounding landscape is part of the Novohrad–Nógrád Geopark, the world’s first cross-border UNESCO-supported geopark. Its mission is to protect and interpret the region’s rich geological heritage. From Šiatorská Bukovinka, numerous trails and educational paths lead to basalt columns, the Medves Plateau, and even Somoskő Castle. A favourite destination for hikers and nature lovers is Sátor Summit, which offers spectacular panoramic views over both Slovakia and Hungary. Cross-Border Connections The village maintains strong cultural and economic ties with nearby Hungarian settlements such as Somoskőújfalu and Salgótarján. Thanks to shared natural heritage and eco-tourism development projects along the border, Šiatorská Bukovinka plays an important role in regional cooperation. Rural Tranquillity and Nature-Based Recreation Šiatorská Bukovinka is an ideal destination for those seeking peace, quiet, and immersive natural experiences. The forests, meadows, volcanic rock formations, and scenic viewpoints around the village offer excellent opportunities for nature-based activities including hiking, birdwatching, and geo-tours. Šiatorská Bukovinka is a place where the volcanic past is brought vividly to life. The strength and beauty of the landscape provide a lasting impression for every visitor. For nature lovers, hikers, and those in search of boundless exploration, this is a must-visit destination in the regio
