More information
According to the legend told by the famous Hungarian writer Kálmán Mikszáth, the history of the village and its fortress dates back to the era of Chieftain Huba, who gifted this land to his daughter, Hajnácska, during the Hungarian conquest. This legend enriches the village’s cultural heritage, enhancing its touristic appeal. Extensive research has confirmed the volcanic origins of Várhegy (Castle Hill), identifying the current basalt formations as remnants of an ancient volcanic vent. The rock formations, developed over millions of years—including basalt breccia and various mineral inclusions—offer unique natural value suitable for sustainable educational and geotourism purposes. Prominent geologists such as József Szabó, Kálmán Szepesházy, and Lajos Jugovics have meticulously studied and described the formation and mineral composition of the basalt rock. The landscape shaped by natural processes provides numerous opportunities for sustainable tourism activities such as hiking, nature exploration, and educational visits. In addition to natural treasures, the area also boasts significant archaeological heritage, including findings dating back to the Middle Stone Age. Since 1964, Várhegy and its surroundings have been under environmental protection and are currently recognized as a nature reserve. This protection contributes to preserving native flora and fauna, including protected plant species such as the maidenhair spleenwort and wild thyme, as well as remarkable animal species like the praying mantis, common kestrel, and various bat species. Ajnácskő offers sustainable experiences to visitors through the conscious preservation of its natural values and cultural traditions, actively contributing to the long-term development of the local community and the achievement of environmental goals.
