Natural Highlights

The distinctive basalt peak of Nagy-kő reflects the volcanic history of the Medves region. Alternating layers of black columnar basalt and grey layered basalt create an impressive geological formation. A previous quarrying activity left behind a natural "basalt stage," offering unique scenic beauty. Nagy-kő belongs to special basalt formations known as "necks," characterized by their resilience to natural erosion and their outstanding geomorphological and scenic value.

Protected Flora

The Nagy-kő area boasts a rich and valuable plant life. On the basalt rocks, the northern spleenwort is a notable presence, while surrounding forests and meadows host other rare species, including:

  • Yellow anemone, decorating the forest floor in spring.

  • Rare bladdernut shrubs reaching heights of up to 2 meters.

  • Sand bugloss and tall skullcap, typical of scree slopes.

  • White broomrape found in open grasslands below sandstone cliffs.

  • Solid-tubered corydalis and rock alyssum on basalt lava.

Visitors exploring the forests might encounter the rare red helleborine orchid, oak-leaved lettuce, and green-flowered catchfly. Hairy oak forests support Micheli's sedge, while sunny slopes and grasslands are home to populations of feather grass species, such as curled and European feather grass.
