Heart of Jesus Lookout
The Jesus Lookout in Farkaslaka (Lupeni in Romanian), Harghita County, stands atop Gordon Hill at an altitude of 953 metres above sea level. The monumental 22-metre-tall stainless steel Jesus statue is not only one of the most renowned landmarks of Székely Land but also one of the largest Christ statues in the world, which visitors can enter.

The statue, which also functions as a lookout point, was completed in 2011. Inside, a spiral staircase leads up to the crown, offering a 360° panoramic view of the Harghita Mountains, Székelyudvarhely, and the valleys of the Carpathians. The lookout is not just a religious symbol but also a tourist attraction, drawing thousands of visitors each year – pilgrims, nature enthusiasts, and curious travellers alike.
The site is accessible by car and on foot, with a short walk leading to the summit from the nearby car park. The surroundings are close to nature, surrounded by forests and clearings, making the lookout an ideal starting point for a sustainable, easy mountain hike or a family outing. There are no commercial facilities near the lookout, offering visitors a genuine connection with the landscape and tranquillity.
The Jesus Lookout was built as a community initiative in Farkaslaka, through local collaboration, and has since served as a meeting point for local identity, faith, and tourism. The site's values – its spiritual message, proximity to nature, and minimal environmental impact – align well with the principles of sustainable tourism and set an example for community-driven attraction development.
