Kováts Photography Museum

The Kováts Photography Museum operates in the city centre of Odorheiu Secuiesc and uniquely showcases over one and a half centuries of photography history as Transylvania's first permanent photography exhibition space. The museum was established from the private collection of the Kováts family and has been passionately and expertly maintained ever since – offering visitors not only technical equipment but also human stories and glimpses into a bygone world.

The exhibition focuses on the development and material culture of 20th-century photography: old cameras, enlargers, darkroom tools, photo lab equipment, glass negatives, and paper prints tell the story of the early days of photography. One of the museum's most valuable sections is the collection of Transylvanian studio photographs, which offers insight into the fashion, customs, and portrait culture from the late 1800s to the second half of the 20th century.

The Kováts Photography Museum not only showcases objects but also serves as a living knowledge centre: engaging the public in the world of photography through temporary exhibitions, lectures on photographic history, masterclasses, school programmes, and themed guided tours. Additionally, it has a key objective of digitising and preserving old photo archives from Udvarhely and the Székely region, contributing to the protection of the region's visual heritage.

The museum is recommended for photography professionals, art enthusiasts, families, and school groups, as it uniquely demonstrates how photography has shaped our perception of the world and ourselves. The exhibition offers an intimate yet inspiring space where technological progress and personal memories come together in perfect harmony.

The Kováts Photography Museum is one of Székelyudvarhely's hidden treasures – a place where the images of the past gain new meaning, and visitors can marvel at the timeless magic of photography.
