More information
The village part named Baglyasalja was once an independent small settlement formed around Baglyas Castle. Built by the Hollókő branch of the Kacsics family, the castle stood on a natural basalt formation, although it did not have significant military importance. Over centuries, the castle and its surroundings faced several destructions, and today only ruins recall its past. Historical memories of the site are integrated into conservation efforts promoting sustainability. Declared a local protected area in 1975, Baglyaskő basalt formation is a geological site of global rarity. The site showcases the diatreme of a phreatomagmatic volcano active approximately 3.5–3.8 million years ago, providing insights into hidden volcanic processes. Notable features include deep-origin mineral clusters, natural coke, and vesicle caves. Visitors can learn about long-term environmental changes, strengthening their sustainability perspective. Although the site is limited in size, Baglyaskő hosts valuable local biodiversity. Noteworthy are the presence of Tatar maple and protected butterfly species such as the swallowtail, peacock butterfly, and large tortoiseshell. Shrubland habitats provide secure nesting sites for the red-backed shrike and blackbird. Sustainable management and visitor education help preserve this fragile ecosystem. Since 2003, the Bükk National Park Directorate has operated a geological exhibition site to educate visitors sustainably. The facility features a 200 m² indoor exhibition space and a landscaped area of 3 hectares, showcasing natural and cultural heritage of the Novohrad-Nógrád Geopark. The garden highlights native plants of the Carpathian Basin, supporting biodiversity protection and sustainable awareness. To support sustainable tourism, visitors are encouraged to use environmentally friendly transportation methods. Your visit contributes to the long-term sustainability of local natural and cultural heritage.
