Székely Calvary and Ugron Chapel
Located on the northern edge of Odorheiu Secuiesc, along the quiet forest trail leading to Mál Hill, the Székely Calvary uniquely combines spiritual reflection with the collective memory of the Székely community and contemporary artistic expression. The central element of the site is the Ugron Chapel, built in 1890 at the request of Ákos Ugron, based on the testament of his ancestor, Lázár Ugron. Originally intended as a burial chapel, the building still preserves the memory of the family’s history.

Along the path leading to the chapel, there is a unique Way of the Cross (Calvary) with 14 stations, created by sculptor Walter Zavaczki. The stations are two-metre-high raw stone steles, carved to depict key events in the history of the Székely people, from the Mongol invasion to recent times. Each column features runic inscriptions and dates, allowing visitors to walk not only the path of faith but also that of historical identity.
The Székely Calvary experience is not only visual and thought-provoking but also deeply connected to nature. The trail is a peaceful, shaded path through a forest, easily accessible on foot, even for families with young children. The site requires no infrastructural intervention or artificial elements, ensuring minimal environmental impact. As such, the Székely Calvary is an example of sustainable tourism: it not only preserves but also raises awareness, conveys values, and builds community.
The Székely Calvary and the Ugron Chapel are not among the most visited tourist destinations – yet they are places of profound significance. The tranquillity, the closeness to nature, and the simplicity and depth of the artworks make this location particularly valuable for those seeking authentic, meaningful experiences in the heart of Székely Land.
